Jeff Van Gundy Fined

Jeff Van Gundy

Marking the largest fine ever given to a coach by the NBA, Jeff Van Gundy was hit hard with a $100,000 fine for his comments to the media about NBA officiating. The Houston Rockets’ coach said to the associated press that a referee in the NBA playoffs said that they were targeting Yao Ming because of complaints made by Mark Cuban to the NBA head offices. He did not identify the official that gave him the information and the league reacted quickly by taking disciplinary actions, even going as far as to threaten Van Gundy with a life-time ban from coaching in the NBA.

My 2 Cents

I definitely think that Van Gundy went too far in bringing up this issue to the press. First of all Mark Cuban had every right to complain because Yao Ming was getting away with everything in the post and while setting screens. Second of all Jeff Van Gundy might just be using this as an excuse for the Rockets not winning, to draw attention away from the series to other problems which “might” exist. Although I still think that the league went too far in slapping a $100,000 fine and threatening him with a ban from coaching. I mean, come on…
