George Karl Suspended

George Karl; the coach of the Denver Nuggets who led them to a miraculous mid season turn-around was fined and suspended for 3 games next season for violating NBA draft rules. The fine was a whopping $200,000 and his suspension is for the first 3 games in the 2005-2006 season. The league reported that George Karl violated NBA draft regulations on May 16th-18th when he attended several workouts at Marquette University involving a player not eligible for this year’s draft.
The General Manager for the Denver Nuggets; Kiki Vandeweghe stated to the associated press:
George made an innocent mistake but we take full responsibility for these actions. The Denver Nuggets fully respect league rules and regulations and we regret any inadvertent violation that occurred.
My 2 Cents
I have to side with the Nuggets that what he did was an innocent mistake, and I still fail to see why the rule is enforced so strictly. Maybe he was just looking for new talent in the future or some other possible motive but I don’t know why that would influence this year’s draft. I am sure the NBA had their reasons; I would just like to hear some of them.
