3OT in Angola

Dirk Nowtizki

Dirk Nowitzki was able to laugh and call it 55 minutes of intense basketball fun.

Joaquim Gomes was on the verge of tears as he talked about his team’s heart and effort.

Those who saw Germany’s 108-103 triple-overtime victory over Angola on Thursday in the first round of the FIBA world championships will never forget it.

Nowitzki scored 11 of his 47 points in the third overtime to give Germany (4-1) the win in the first triple-overtime game in the history of the world championships and second place in the six-team Group B.

Angola (3-2) finished third, but added to the respect the African champions have earned in the tournament.

“That was just a fun game to be a part of for the fans, coaches and players,” said Nowitzki, the 7-foot star from the Dallas Mavericks who had 16 rebounds and went 17-for-17 from the free-throw line while playing 49 minutes. #

Holy cow that must’ve been an awesome game, first 3OT in history, and damn… Dirk is just unstoppable. A seven footer who can hit threes and goes 17 for 17 from the line?
